Class Description: Borrowing from an eclectic range of movement styles, this class offers the dancer exploration into the athletic, rhythmic, spatial and dynamic complexity that comprises modern dance. Using classical techniques as well as progressive and experimental exercises, warm-up will include mindful work geared toward developing body awareness and efficient movement patterns. The class will develop into energetic and choreographically intriguing movement phrases that focus on inverted techniques and sharing the dance. This is a vigorous class that challenges verticality, turns disorientation into the norm and, awakens the movement possibilities inherent in dancing upside down. Kneepads suggested.

About the classes and Sankofa Project's practice & philosophy:
The same rhythm will be explored in both the drum and dance classes. Dancers are encouraged to take drum class to experience and internalize the rhythm; Drummers are encouraged to stay to play for dance class to observe and internalize the movement while putting their knowledge to work. We believe this to be vital in creating a symbiosis between the drummer and dancer and remaining true to the tradition of continuum, the circle, and interdependence/reciprocity. This is the essence of not only the functional nature of West African rhythm and movement but also of its cultural practice.
